Yamaha CS-15 37-Key Monophonic / Duophonic Analog Synthesizer, 1979-1982, made in Japan

Link: synthtopia | vintagesynth | Service Manual

This synth really has its own sound. The CS-15's got style. Built like a tank with a lot of nice knobs and best of all, not one but two of those funny sounding multimode filters. It's actually a duophonic / bitimbral synth but you have to connect it to CV (Hz/V like Korg not V/Oct) to get the extra voice. Each of the two VCOs has its own CV/Gate control.

The best things about it are the flexibility of the VCFs and the routings to the filters and envelopes. You can rout VCO 1 to both VCFs and the VCFs to any of the envelopes positive or negative voltage. The VCFs are 12 dB/Oct and are switchable between low, band or high-pass. They are the key to the nice sound of the Yamaha CS family. Other nice features are noise, external-in for processing other sounds, LFO with Sample & Hold for those bubbling sounds and an individual auto-bend for the VCOs.

The CS-15 is great for strange blips, bass and tiny highpass sounds. The ADSRs aren't as fast as the CS-10 but they are ok. A nice feature is the 'brilliance' slider that can control either or both VCFs.

Sony SQA-200 Stereo Quadraphonic Decoder Amplifier, [serial #53555] 1972-1974, made in Japan

Link: radiomuseum | youtube | hifiengine

Description

Welcome to the world of the quadraphonic four-channel stereo sound.

Stereo Quadraphonic sound adds depth to stereophonic sound because the sound is reproduced over four widely separated speakers, giving an impression of surround sound.

With SQ sound, a symphony orchestra is not only displayed over the two front speakers as in conventional stereo, but its reverberant sounds are provided over back speakers, bringing actual concert hall presence to the listener.

Also with this SQ system individual performers can be recorded to create new musical effects with the listener being completely enveloped by 360° sound; or, a performer can freely move around as in theatre or show recordings left, right, front or back.

Quadraphonic sound reproduction is now possible with your present high fidelity music system by using the Sony decoder amplifier Model SQA-200 (which has an amplifier and also two output connectors for the back speakers) and two additional back speakers.

When playing 4-channel SQ records, the special decoder in the SQA-200 provides reproduction of the original program on four separate channels.

With the SQA-200 you can play SQ records on a conventional stereophonic player, and record and play back the SQ sound on a two channel tape recorder.

Conventional stereophonic programs become more dynamic with outstanding front channel separation and back channel separation, and accurate positioning of each musical instrument.
