B&O Bang & Olufsen Beovox S75 Type: 6313 , 1977-1980, made in Denmark

Manufactured: 1977 - 1980
Designer: Jacob Jensen
Colours: Rosewood, Teak

The S75 was a four way speaker designed for stand mounting and was a suitable match for any of the receivers offered at the time. It could be regarded as the bigger brother of the fabled S45.2 and replaced the very similar S60 in the speaker range.

The cross over was changed along with a redesign of the cabinet. The result was a speaker with more bass emphasis than the S60 but still with a soaring top end. Criticism could be levelled that the bass was at times slightly overblown, but for rock music, it hit the spot.

The extra size also emphasised the cabinet makers' skill with the rosewood model in particular often showing a wonderful selection of flame veneer.

Although these speakers lack the accuracy of the S45.2, many will find the extra bass an attraction and will choose these in front of their fabled brother.

Beovox Uni-Phase S75

Pressure chamber speaker with linear phase sound reproduction and wide frequency range: 36 - 20000 Hz. Was suitable for placement in a shelving system but also available with aluminium pedestal for those who prefer a free-standing model. Speaker units included a 25cm woofer, a special 12,5cm Phase Link unit, a 5cm mid-range dome and a 2,5 dome tweeter. Volume was 40 litres; weight 11kg.

The largest of the S type Uniphase speakers, and a development of Beovox S 60. In common with the rest of the Uniphase range, Beovox S 75 had an angled resin front and a fine wooden cabinet. The rear panel was vinyl covered chipboard and a high quality wooden carcass. The removable grille was plastic in construction with pegs to fit in holes on the resin front and cut outs for the drive units. It was covered in black cloth. The speakers were identical with the drive units not being mirrored. Two dome units were fitted at the top of the speaker, the smaller being a 2.5cm and the second a 5cm unit fitted in its own cylindrical tube. The phase link unit was again fitted with its own cylinder in a similar way to Beovox S 45-2. On this occasion, the phase link unit was a 12.5cm unit. The woofer was interesting as instead of the normal Peerless unit, a high quality SEAS unit was present. Connection was made by the usual recessed 2 pin DIN plug on the rear. An optional stand was available and preferable as with a frequency response down to 36HZ shelf mounting could lead to an over emphasised bass. The S 75 had the later square stands.

Beovox S 75 was designed to be used with any of the Beomasters made at this time, and in particular Beomaster 4400 with its 75W output, this being the main reason for the replacement of the very similar Beovox S 60. Beovox S 75 was replaced by Beovox S 120 in the revised Uniphase range.

Philips SBC-AH 1000 DAC Dolby Digital Headphone Amp System

Dolby Headphones.

B&O Bang & Olufsen Beovox S45-2 type 6312, 1978-1982, made in Denmark

Manufactured: 1978 - 1982
Designer: Jacob Jensen
Colours: Rosewood, Teak

An exceptional little bookshelf speaker of hi-fi quality with a frequency range of 38 - 20000 Hz and less than 1% harmonic distortion.

You will find these speakers regularly recommended on BeoWorld. They have the same height and width as the lesser S35 speakers but are 3cm deeper and 1kg heavier. This small size difference makes an immense difference to the sound though. The extra filler drive unit adds hugely to the all important midrange sound and this is, to many users' ears, the best balanced bookshelf speaker made by B&O. What it lacks in ultimate bass, it repays in accuracy and tone. The optional floor stand is elegant and effective and worth hunting out. A capacitor change may be needed to make an old pair sing but you are very unlikely to be disappointed by purchasing a pair of these.

For those in search of more bass, S75s are the bigger brother but lack the sonic purity found in the S45.2. To beat these in this range, you need M100s and a bigger house!

Linear phase sound reproduction. Speaker units include a 20cm woofer, a special 8cm Phase Link unit, and a 2,5cm dome tweeter. Volume 25 litres; weight 7kg.

Philips CD100 Stereo Compact Disc Player, 1983-84, made in Belgium

This is the simplest CD player in a range which Philips plan to introduce, and indeed they claim that it is the smallest on the market (being identical, except for external finish, to the Marantz CD-63). It is a top-loader and therefore not entirely suited to stacking in a rack or minisystem—unless it can be located at the top. The disc compartment lid is mechanically latched but will operate the stop mechanism if pressed to open during play. Inserting and removing the disc is easy, if not quite so simple as on the glidingdrawer front-loading types.

The sloping front panel carries basic, but well laid-out, controls and a sensible display scheme. The latter consists of green bar-lights (1 to 15) to show the number of tracks on the disc (or in the selected programme) with a second row of lights to indicate the track being played. The mains on/ off button is to the left of the display panel and on the right are buttons for play/next track, pause and stop/clear memory. Then follow four small buttons for the programming and repeat functions. Each track to be stored (up to 15) must be selected by pressing the `select' button the requisite number of times (or holding it down while it hops through the numbers sequentially) followed by the 'store' button to enter it in the memory. This can take a fair amount of time, depending on the sequence desired, but works smoothly enough—and at least the track selection is sequential and so, if track 12 is to follow II, for example, a single tap on the select button will move the 'select' function to 11 As well as building up a programme sequence by this 'add-in' procedure, it is possible—and preferable where most of the tracks are to be included in their normal order—to adopt a 'take out' procedure using the 'store' and 'cancel' buttons together. The 'repeat' button is self-explanatory in that it will cause the machine to repeat the whole disc or the sequence already programmed. However, repeating a single track can be initiated by selecting the track number and pressing 'play' once again.

The speaker system which hits the 25th anniversary model of AR foundation which the technical staff who dealt with the design of vartical series and high-tech series tackled.

The 20cm corn type Woofer is carried in low-pass.

The 3.2cm ring radiator type tweeter is carried in the high region.
Power handling capability is heightened by pouring in magnetic liquid between pole piece and a yoke. Moreover, since magnetic liquid leads a voice coil to the central axis of pole piece automatically, its accuracy of a unit improves and it is enabling little distorted play.

The traditional acoustic suspension system is adopted as the enclosure, and the low-pitched sound play is improved in air inside the enclosure by which full sealing was carried out acting as a spring supporting a corn. audio-database
